WEST CHESTER, OH (FOX19) - A West Chester police officer has been critically injured in a crash.

Nicholas Gattermeyer, 24, was responding to a burglary in the 7700 block of Barrett Road just before 2 a.m. Tuesday morning. While on his way, he crashed his cruiser on Dimmick Road near Friar Tuck.

Another officer came upon the crash scene about eight minutes after it happened and called for assistance. West Chester Fire Department crews freed Gattermeyer from his vehicle and he was taken to University Hospital via ambulance, where he is listed in critical condition.

AirCare was called to scene, but was not able to fly because of fog.

Gattermeyer was hired by the West Chester Police Department in 2008.

"A dedicated officer was involved in a crash today," said West Chester Police Chief Erik Niehaus. "We ask everyone for their thoughts and prayers."

Niehaus says an investigation into what happened could take several weeks.
