CINCINNATI (FOX19) – A suspect accused of killing a young woman in Northside fired shots at officers during a SWAT standoff before turning the gun on himself.
Cincinnati Police were called to the Ashwood Apartments in the 1700 block of Casey Drive around 3:45 p.m. Sunday. When police responded, they found Kaniesha Dangerfield, 22, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest in the front seat of a car in the parking lot of the apartment complex.
Investigators identified a suspect, Leetae Williams, 28, and a warrant was issued for his arrest. SWAT officers responded back to Casey Drive and attempted to make contact with Williams. Without warning, Williams fired gunshots at the officers, striking Officer Daniel Kowalski in the helmet.
Police chief Tom Streicher said Kowalski's helmet was hit twice, and most likely saved his life. Officer Kowalski was treated and released from University Hospital.
SWAT officers continued efforts to make contact with Williams when a final gunshot was heard. Officers entered the apartment and found Williams dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
Neighbors say Dangerfield is from Cincinnati and lived in the apartment complex for some time. She was the mother of two young sons.
"For her life to be taken like that, especially during the holidays and having kids herself, it's hard on her and her family, especially the children," said Carl Johnson, who knew the victim.
Investigators say several eyewitnesses have apparently come forward with information on the crime.
