Lights going out on Roebling Suspension Bridge

COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) - The necklace lights that illuminate the Roebling Suspension Bridge will go out on Monday night.

The bridge is currently under a $16.2 million painting project under the direction of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. The lights have to be removed before the cleaning and painting of the bridge can resume next spring.

All decorative lighting, including the necklace lighting, pier and turret lights will be turned off. The structure's roadway and pedestrian lighting will remain on for safety purposes.

The Covington Cincinnati Suspension Bridge Committee (CCSBC) says the current lighting is aging and needs to be replaced.  The committee says it needs $450,000 to replace and maintain a new energy-efficient LED-based decorative lighting system on the bridge after the painting project is completed in November 2010. So far, the committee has raised $150,000.

"If adequate funds can't be raised, the John A Roebling Bridge will not be illuminated," said Armstrong. "We're asking help so that future generations can enjoy this historic landmark in its full glory."

The Roebling Bridge opened in 1867 and has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1975. The lights have illuminated the bridge since 1984. They will go off at 8 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 7.
