CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - December 20th was a day with special significance to many Catholics in Cincinnati, especially one in particular. It's the day the Most Reverend Daniel E. Piarczyk became a priest 50 years ago, a bishop 35 years ago, and was installed as archbishop 27 years ago.
Archbishop Pilarczyk, 75, a native of Dayton, Ohio, was ordained a priest on December 20, 1959. His ordination as a bishop in 1974, and installation as archbishop in 1982 were also on December 20, 1982.
Pilarczyk celebrated his golden anniversary with an invitation-only Mass at Cathedral of St. Peter in Chains. Representatives of the 281 parishes of the Cincinnati Archdiocese were in attendance.
"He's been a Bishop and an Archbishop longer than anybody in the United States. He has already submitted his resignation to the Vatican, upon the age of 75, " says Dan Andriacco, Communications Director for the Archdiocese. "Very shortly will be accepted and he will go into retirement, so for many of us this is a last chance to honor him."
When Pilarczyk retires, Coadjutor Archbishop Dennis Scnurr will become the 10th presiding bishop of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.
