LOUISVILLE, KY (FOX19) - A 15-year-old boy accused of murdering his father, then trying to burn his body was in court Monday. FOX19's sister-station WAVE reports Dewayne Bryant pleaded not guilty Tuesday, to charges of murder, tampering with physical evidence and abuse of a corpse.
According to court documents, on April 2, 2009, Dewayne Bryant allegedly stabbed his father, 36-year-old Jermaine Bryant, as he was sleeping at the apartment the two shared on Woodbine Avenue. Dewayne, who lives in Cincinnati, had been staying with his father in Louisville.
Court documents also indicate that Dewayne remained alone in the apartment with his father's body for approximately two to three days before his grandmother discovered Jermaine was dead.
Prosecutors plan to try Bryant as adult. His attorney, Carlos Wood, calls the circumstances surrounding the alleged murder "unfortunate."
"He's down here in Louisville," Wood said. "He's alone. "It's going to be a very difficult and very long process for him and his family."
Bryant remains jailed on $150,000 bond.
His next court appearance was set for Jan. 19.
