Pawn shops rake in Christmas business

NORWOOD, OH (FOX19)  - In an era of slumping sales, Ted's Pawn Shop in Norwood is seeing some big business. Owners are turning folks' need to get out of the red into major green.

On Wednesday night, Norwood residents Perry and Amanda Workman shelled out dough for some items they needed and others they wanted.

"Looking to try to get some deals," said Perry Workman. "Some jewelry. {Ted's} is a pretty good place to come."

Longtime customer Scott Burgess has one thing on his list: earrings.

"Gold hoops," Burgess said. "We searched around. I had no idea what we were looking for."

But he said he spotted the perfect pair at Ted's. Not only was it the right design but it was for the right price.

It's a story Gabe Tincher knows too well.

"A lot of people are looking for bargains," Tincher said.

His family runs Ted's Pawn Shop.

"Whether it's on jewelry, electronics, tv's, dvd players, you name it," Tincher said. "I think a lot of people just want to save some money. I think I lot of people don't want to pay retail right now."

While Tincher said tough times have forced many families to shop at pawn shops such as theirs, many more have been shopping here for years; snatching up bargains on everything from games to guns.

"I come here actually every year and throughout the year," said longtime customer Ronald Murphy.

We can't tell you what Murphy bought his family tonight because his wife and kids would find out what they're getting under the tree.

"I've actually already bought their gifts here," Murphy said. "I purchased all three of them something here for Christmas."

If you're looking for last minute bargains on Christmas Eve, Tincher said the store will be open from 9a.m. until 3p.m. on Thursday.
