BATAVIA (FOX 19) -- While driving down the road, you see the lights, hear the sirens, you need to pull over, right?

The Ohio State Highway Patrol says put your emergency lights on and take second to identify the car that is behind you.

"It is pretty rare that people are out there impersonating an officer, but then last week just lets you realize there are potentially people out there impersonating officers," Sgt.. Paul Lezotte says.

Sgt. Lezotte says in Ohio, there will always be mounted lights on the outside of the vehicle and the car must be marked for the initial traffic stop.

He says if you are concerned, stop in a well lit area, or near a police or fire station. You can also call dispatch and ask if any officer is actually pulling you over.

Finally, ask to see their badge and police ID to verify who they are.
