COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) - Bengals linebacker Rey Maualuga has pled guilty to drunk driving after an unexpected appearance in a Kenton County courtroom.

Maualuga was arrested for DUI and careless driving last week in Covington after hitting two parked cars and a parking meter. Police say his blood-alcohol level was nearly twice the legal limit.

Kenton County District Judge Ken Easterling slapped Maualuga with a seven-day suspended jail sentence, a 90-day suspension of his driver's license and about $350 in court costs and fines. He will also have to attend a rehab program and be on probation for two years.

Maualuga's appearance in the Kenton County courtroom was a surprise, as his next court date wasn't scheduled until Feb. 25. He had pled not guilty during his arraignment.

Maualuga made a brief statement following the court appearance, apologizing to his family, the Bengals, fans and the city of Cincinnati. He also thanked his family and team for the support.

"I will learn from this and become a better person and better man for all this," he said. "I ensure you it will never happen again."

The Bengals released the following statement on Tuesday: "The Bengals are disappointed in the actions by Rey that led to the charges against him. We expect a higher standard from our players, as is stressed to them continually. Rey must work to repair the damage this has done to his reputation, and he has begun that process with an apology, an expression of strong remorse and a prompt resolution in the Kentucky court. We expect that Rey will keep taking further steps, and the Club will actively follow up with Rey in working with him from a personal standpoint. Rey's on-field play and community involvement were excellent during his rookie season, and the Club continues to anticipate an outstanding Bengals career for him."
