Little Miami levy downed by voters

Posted by Richard Todd - email

MORROW, OH (FOX19) - A hotly contested school levy in the Little Miami School District in Warren County has lost by a large margin in a turnout that was heavy for a special election.

The Warren County Board of Elections says there were 5,951 votes against the levy and 4,925 in favor, a 55 to 45 percent margin.  This is a larger margin than the most recent operating levy.  Two early tries also lost by landslides.

During the campaign, supporters of the levy said failure would lead to such underfunding that the state would take over the schools.  Some people who said they were going to voted against it said they simply couldn't afford the4 increased taxes that would result from a 16.95 mill levy, which is historically ver4y large.  Other opponents said they were concerned with the school's spending or with how the state of Ohio funds schools.

The voter turnout was nearly 57 percent, historically a very high turnout for an election where this is the only issue on the ballot.
