Gas leak forces evacuations in Norwood

NORWOOD, OH (FOX19) - About 20 residences and two businesses were evacuated Thursday after a gas leak in Norwood.

Bob Welch with Cincinnati HAZMAT says the gas was coming from a 40-foot well that crews drilled last week in the street in the 2400 block of Robertson. The well was dug after a request by Knowlton Manufacturing, a sheet metal company. They wanted to test for chemicals after an underground tank was removed, and got permission from the city to hire a contractor to drill the well.

Welch says its unclear why the gas has just now started leaking after the well was dug seven days ago. Crews are performing tests to try to determine what the gas is, but Duke Energy says it is not natural gas.A sample of the gas was collected.

As a precaution, homes and businesses within 300 feet of the well were evacuated for several hours. The evacuation has since been lifted, but the gas has still not been identified. Nearby Sharpsburg School was not evacuated.

No injuries have been reported.

The Ohio EPA is investigating the incident
