Community organizations help homeless stay warm

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - The latest round of snow is over, but cold weather remains.

Community organizations are scrambling to do what they can to help those less fortunate.

Lifehouse Youth Services helps children and families in times of need. On Thursday, they will take their mission to the cold streets of Hamilton County. An outreach team will be out starting at 4 p.m. to hand out coats and blankets to the homeless.

Students at the University of Cincinnati are also doing what they can. The Hill-lel Center has created a project called Operation Warmup. The students make baskets with necessities like shampoo, blankets towels and clothes. Although they've been doing this since 1996, they have found this year to be particularly important.

"We're unable to get as much out, but at least we're getting something out to help them," said Jennifer Schaffer, a UC student. "Because if people are struggling now, imagine how the less fortunate are doing compared to us."

The students will be donating the care packages on Thursday.

When the Lighthouse team goes out to the streets they'll be making sure the homeless know where the shelters are.
