NEWPORT, KY (FOX19) -- A local police officer faces charges after being accused of driving intoxicated in his cruiser Thursday evening.
Officer Gregory Simmons was attending an in-service criminal justice training in Richmond. That evening, he visited a Mexican restaurant where he is reported to have had a couple drinks.
According to Newport Police, his cruiser was burning rubber in the parking lot after getting his tire caught on a curb. Restaurant employees then called police. Simmons was stopped shortly and refused a breathalyzer test. He was arrested and charged with DUI.
Newport Police Chief went to Richmond to pick up Simmons' cruiser. He says that Officer Simmons is currently suspended without pay. Disciplinary action is pending based on the outcome of his charges.
