CINCINNATI (FOX19) - A man was found dead after a two-alarm fire hit a home on Harrison Avenue in South Fairmount.

When firefighters arrived at the home shortly before midnight Tuesday, they were told the victim might be on the second floor, but they were unable to find him.

After they got ahead of the fire, another sweep found the victim dead.

The victim was 56 year-old Tom Bardo.

His brother ran into the burning home to try and save him. Ron Bardo says, "I called out and said, 'Tom, Tom...can you hear me?'" said Ron Bardo. "He said, 'I got it under control,' but he didn't."

A fire investigation shows that food left on an unattended stove caused the blaze.

Ron Bardo says his brother liked to cook.

The fire was mostly confined to the inside of the home, and a CFD spokesperson said there was extensive damage to the second floor.

$40,000 in damages were caused.
