Police search Avondale after report of large cat in the area; nothing found

NORTH AVONDALE, OH (FOX19) - Police spent several hours Thursday morning searching for a large cat after receiving several reports of something in the Avondale area.

Several witnesses reported seeing a large white cat, possibly a tiger, lion or leopard, around 7:30 a.m. in the area of Glenwood and Harvey.

"I looked at him and I said, 'what is that,' and he said, we both said at the same time, 'that's a lion!'" said witness Rodney Meeks.

Police first called the Cincinnati Zoo, who reported that all of their animals were accounted for.

Witnesses say they watched the big animal jump the fence around the Phoenix Community Learning Center, then disappear.

The animal was reportedly in a courtyard area containing a storage box for an air conditioning unit. Firefighters used an extended ladder and a thermal imaging camera to get a better view. They later opened the box, and found nothing.

Glenwood Avenue was blocked between Harvey and Washington while police searched, but is now reopen.
