House explosion in Fort Wright

FORT WRIGHT, KY (FOX19) - Officials say that the cause of a house explosion on Wednesday morning may have been from burglars.

Neighbors reported hearing the explosion around 9:30 a.m. in the 1600 block of Park Road at a vacant home. When emergency crews arrived, the building was extensively damaged and was burning.

The investigation revealed that unknown individuals may have been stealing copper pipe from the residence when a natural gas line was broken. Officials say that the broken gas line is most likely the cause of the explosion.

The home is a total loss, but no one was hurt.

The Fort Wright Fire department was assisted with the investigation by the fire departments from Park Hills and Fort Mitchell, the Kenton County Emergency management, and the Kentucky State Fire Marshal.

The residence was a ranch two-family home with both of the units up for rent. The owner had been by to check on the home about a week ago, and said nothing appeared to seem wrong.

The Fort Wright Police and Fire Departments are now asking anyone with information or who may have seen anything or anyone suspicious in the area to Contact the Police department at 859-331-2191.

Officials are also looking for any information on anyone scrapping metal in the area.
