Push for response on Census Day

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - Census officials are urging everyone to fill out Census forms today, a push that's especially important for Cincinnati.

The U.S. Census says its forms are being mailed back from Cincinnati residents at rates that are among the lowest in the country.

With a 39 percent return rate, Cincinnati is well below the national average of 51 percent.

And Cincinnati is not alone in Ohio - only 32 percent of Cleveland households have mailed back their Census forms.

Despite Ohio's two largest metro areas lagging behind, statewide, 51 percent of households have responded, coming in slightly above the national rate.

Census officials are hopeful these numbers will go up in the coming weeks - after April 15, Census workers will visit, in person, households that have not yet mailed back their forms.

It's an expensive process that costs cities federal funding in the end.

Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory says the city lost $104 million in federal funding because of an inaccurate census count ten years ago.
