Ind. cow gives birth to rarity - triplet calves

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) - A part-time cattle farmer in western Indiana is celebrating a barnyard rarity - the birth of healthy triplet calves to one of his cows.

Vigo County resident Fred Butts was stunned March 30 when his 11-year-old cow, "Express Miss Pride," delivered the three calves.

Butts had expected twins. Triple births are rare, occurring only once in every 100,000 births.

And veterinarian Bryan Wolfe says it's even rarer for all three calves to be born alive.

Wolfe says the two heifers and a bull appear to be in good health but are slightly smaller than a single-born calf.

Their artificially inseminated mother is allowing all three to nurse. Butts, who owns a fencing company, says his 26 head of cattle are a hobby.
