Old E-town Elementary goes down in flames

ELIZABETHTOWN, OH (FOX19) - The old Elizabethtown Elementary School in Whitewater Township went down in flames Sunday night.

A person who was in the area outside the school called Hamilton County dispatch and said there was what seemed like the smell of an electrical fire seeping from the school.

First crews on the scene found evidence of a fire that had spread through the empty school and quickly called for help.  Within a short time, the fire had grown to a very large size and the smoke could be seen for miles.

Fire trucks from innumerable local departments showed up, most of them to get water to fight the fire.  There are no hydrants in Elizabethtown, so tanker trucks from as far away as Walton -Verona joined a relay race against time to get more water to the overhead nozzle truck and other trucks being used to attack the fire.

Besides the tanker contingent, there were also full squads from most of western Hamilton County and Eastern Dearborn County.  Elizabethtown is only a mile from the Indiana border.

Hordes of local people, most of them who had attended the school, gathered on the expansive front lawn to watch the flames and call up memories.

A Whitewater Township firefighter had a minor injury and went to the hospital, but she was quickly treated and was back at the fire scene Sunday night. Crews worked overnight cleaning up the scene.
