Local high school student killed in Alabama accident

FOX19's Regina Russo spoke by phone with Alabama State Trooper/Spokesman Curtis Summerville who confirmed to FOX19 that a single vehicle crash on Interstate 65 Friday afternoon claimed the life of a Kentucky teenager and injured seven others.  The crash occurred at approximately 1pm at the 351 mile marker near Athens, which is near Huntsville.

Maria E. Schaffstein, 17 of Park Hills, Ky a passenger in the 2004 Honda Pilot EXL was pronounced dead at the scene.  According to Trooper Summerville, driver Katherine Russo, 18 of Park Hills, Ky., was attempting to pass a tractor trailer when her SUV ran off the edge of the roadway.  Russo then overcorrected and lost control the vehicle.  The vehicle entered the median, flipped over and continued across the southbound lanes of I-65 before coming to rest upright on the shoulder of the southbound lanes.

Jessica A. Russo, 17 of Park Hills, Ky,; Megan E. Downing, 18 of Ft. Mitchell Ky,; Krista M. Noll, 18 of Ft. Mitchell, Ky,; Catherine Ammerman, 17, of Florence, Ky and Jordan L. Zumdick, 18 of Ft. Wright, Ky,; were all ejected and transported to local hospitals for treatment.

The driver and another passenger Megan E. Berberrich 18, of Ft. Wright, Ky believed to be the only occupants who were wearing  seatbelts, were not ejected, but were transported to local hospitals for treatment.

Notre Dame Academy will hold several prayer gatherings on Saturday and Sunday. Supporters will meet in the Alumnae Hall at 12:00pm, 3:00pm, and 6:00pm. Visitors will park in the theatre lot and enter though the theatre doors.

ATHENS, AL (FOX19) -- A local student is dead and seven others are injured after an vehicle accident in Alabama.

State Troopers say that an SUV flipped on Interstate 65 in Athens just before 1:00pm on Friday. One person was killed and seven others were injured in the crash.

Officials have confirmed that 17-year-old Maria Schaffstein died in the crash. She was a student from Notre Dame Academy in Park Hills, KY.

According to Alabama State Troopers, Schaffstein was the passenger in the SUV when the driver was trying to pass a tractor trailer, but went off the highway. The driver overcorrected, causing the SUV to flip and crash into the median.

On the Notre Dame Academy web site, President Sr. Mary Shauna Bankemper asks the parents to keep the girls and their families in prayer.
