24 horses up for adoption at John Henry tribute

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Two dozen abused or neglected horses are up for adoption as part of the Kentucky Horse Park's annual memorial to the late thoroughbred champion John Henry.

Now in its third year, the John Henry Equine Adoption Fair aims to draw awareness to the plight of horses whose previous owners couldn't afford to keep them.

It also provides a forum for various equine rescue groups to meet and coordinate their efforts.

Many of the horses up for adoption for a small fee Saturday are retired racehorses - some abandoned, others saved from slaughter.

The numbers have grown each year.

Horse park organizers formed the fair in 2007 as a tribute to John Henry, who came from humble pedigrees to become a two-time Horse of the Year. He is buried at the park.
