CINCINNATI (FOX19) - John Strutz has been found guilty of murdering and dismembering his wife, Kristan.

Hamilton County Common Pleas Judge John Andrew West announced his verdict just before noon Tuesday, moments after closing arguments had been completed.

"I am convinced beyond all reasonable doubt that the State of Ohio has proven that John Strutz purposefully caused the death of his wife," said Judge West.

As the judge read the verdict, Strutz's dropped his head and shook it side to side.

Judge West acquitted Strutz of one murder count - murder with felonious assault - on Monday, but found him guilty on Tuesday of the remaining charges - murder, gross abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence.

West commended attorneys before announcing his verdict, saying it was a well-tried case.

"Cases are decided on facts and this one is no different," said West.

Sentencing for Strutz will be May 18 at 9 a.m. He could face life in prison.

Kristan Strutz's family spoke after the verdict, saying they were happy with the outcome, but focusing on Kristan's children, saying they will have to grow up without a mother.

"He's a psychopath," said prosecuting attorney Megan Shanahan after the verdict was announced. "He deserves to spend the rest of his life in jail."

Defense attorney William Mathews II said he was disappointed in the verdict, but not surprised. He wouldn't answer the question of whether or not he believed Strutz's story.

Strutz took the witness stand Monday and testified that he did not kill or dismember Kristan, whose torso was found last summer in a trash can at their home.

Strutz testified that he didn't know what happened to his wife and pled not guilty to the charges.

The case was heard by a judge without a jury, as Strutz requested.
