Defense takes over in Pickens trial

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Defense attorneys will begin making their case Tuesday morning in the trial of Mark Pickens.

Pickens is accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend, Noelle Washington, her 9-month-old son and a 3-year-old girl she was babysitting last summer in Over the Rhine. Pickens, 20, faces the death penalty if he is convicted on all three counts of aggravated murder.

Prosecutors took over a week to try and prove that Pickens is guilty. Key testimony from the prosecutors came from a fellow inmate at the Hamilton County Justice Center, who testified that Pickens told him he shot all three victims in the head.

However, defense attorney argued that the inmate was not reliable, and sent an extortion letter asking for money to keep quiet.

Monday on the stand, a deputy coroner testified that evidence backed up claim that the victims were shot in the head. Deputy Coroner William Ralson said Washington and the two children were all shot execution style.

"This would be what we call a close range wound and in general for most handguns the presence of soot is going to be seen within 6-12 inches," said Ralston.

The defense may take only a day to prove their case. After that, there will be closing arguments, then the jury will get the case.
