NDA student remains in critical condition

PARK HILLS, KY (FOX19) - A Notre Dame Academy senior injured in a car crash while returning from Spring Break remains in critical condition in an Alabama hospital.

Jessie Russo was one of eight people in an SUV that crashed on an Alabama highway earlier this month. One of the girls, Maria Schaffstein, 17, died in the crash.

School officials say Russo remains in critical condition in the hospital's neurological intensive care unit. Doctors have begun the process of removing her from a medically induced coma as the swelling in her brain decreases.

Meanwhile, another student hospitalized after the crash, Krista Noll, has been released from a hospital and Alabama and was transported to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, where she is expected to remain for several weeks.

The five other girls involved in the accident have returned to school.

"All of us - students, faculty and staff at Notre Dame Academy - are all very happy to have them safely home and to be able to welcome them back to school," school officials said in a statement.
