Liberty Twp. school gets donation; teaches science "CSI" style

LIBERTY TWP, OH (FOX19) -It's not something you normally see in a seventh grade science class
"They tell us that they use it for crimes and stuff like that, to help catch the actually people," said seventh grader Joey Rowe.
Students at Mother Teresa Catholic Elementary school are experimenting with a 310 DNA analyzer, similar to technology you see on TV.
"So this is the very same instrument that's on CSI," said Parent Greg LaCrosse.
"We can take a fork that they've used, we can take a finger print and we can look at that and see how we can take a DNA sample from that," said seventh grade science teacher Karen Geiger.
The machine valued at more than $40,000 was donated to the school by Life Technologies.
The idea came from Life Technologies Regional Specialist Greg LaCroose, also a parent at the school -- on a mission to put an end to the declining number of students  interested in science.
"I went to the company and said we really need to start to reverse this trend, how can we do that? And one of the ways that I felt that we could do that is by bringing the live technology," LaCrosse said.
The goal is taking the technology out of the textbook -- students take test samples of their own DNA and learn how to decipher the genetics.
"Now we have the opportunity to show them a little bit more about a science, higher up science and get them interested in science careers," Geiger said.
Keeping the science curriculum cool for students.
