ALEXANDRIA, KY (FOX19) - An Alexandria Police Officer came upon some good fortune when he spotted a stolen vehicle that he had taken a report on earlier in the day.

Officer J.B. Brown took a report on a stolen 2005 Buick LaCrosse just after 2 p.m. Wednesday.

At 9:20 p.m. the same day, Officer Brown was off-duty with his step-son and helping his sergeant move into a new apartment. After finishing the move, Officer Brown and his step-son pulled up to the drive-thru at Burger King and while in line, spotted a vehicle pulling into the lot of the restaurant and that matched the description of the stolen Buick.

Officer Brown checked the license plate number, and found that it matched that of the stolen car. He then called on-duty officers to assist him, and the male driver of the vehicle, Larry Daniel, 27, of Alexandria, admitted that he stole the car earlier that day.

Daniel told police he and his girlfriend were in need of bus fare, so they started checking for unlocked vehicles in the Village Green Shopping Center looking to steal change. Daniel told police he found a spare key in the center console of the Buick and decided to take the vehicle instead of the bus. He picked up his girlfriend and took her to work, then picked her up from work later and went to Burger King with the intention of dumping the vehicle and leaving.

Daniel was arrested and charged with receiving stolen property, operating a motor vehicle on a suspended operators license and a bench warrant in Kenton County. His girlfriend, Cassandra Mercer, 19, was also charged with receiving stolen property. Both were taken to the Campbell County Detention Center.
