HAMILTON, OH (FOX19) -- A water main break has one local neighborhood under a boil advisory on Sunday.

The City of Hamilton has issued a Boil Advisory for 17 residents who live between 5341 5501 Headgates Road in Fairfield Township.

A water main break occurred on the Headgates Road Sunday morning and caused a partial depressurization of the water distribution system. If the water pressure drops below 20 psi, bacterial contamination of drinking water may be a possibility.

The city is asking the 17 residents to uses these precautions:

  1. During this advisory, those customers affected may assure purity of their water by boiling vigorously for a least one (1) full minute (after water begins to bubble).
  • Boiling kills harmful bacteria that could be in the water that can cause illness
  • Includes water used for brushing teeth, making ice & drinks, washing food, and even water for pets
  • Throw away any ice made during a boil advisory – freezing does not kill bacteria
  • After advisory – flush house pipes, ice makers, hot water heaters, water softeners, garden hoses and change filters before using for drinking and cooking
  • Adults & teens can use water for bathing – but be careful not to swallow water
  • Young children should be given a sponge bath since they often swallow water
  • Wash clothes as you normally do
  • You can use your dishwasher as long as there is a high temperature cycle

    2.  Utilize bottled water for drinking and cooking.

The boil advisory will remain in effect until two consecutive clear sets of water samples are obtained, until at least Tuesday.

The city of Hamilton says that the boiling advisory is a precautionary measure and the likelihood of contamination is minimal.
