Man about to be extradited in Calif. killing dies

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a man about to be extradited from Canada to face charges in a 1984 slaying in California apparently committed suicide after learning his appeal to avoid extradition had been denied.

Orange County prosecutors and Huntington Beach police say 53-year-old Gerald Su Go died Thursday in Toronto. He was charged with murder in the Nov. 14, 1984, killing and attempted rape of 38-year-old Elizabeth Hoffschneider, whose case remained unsolved.

A DNA match in 2005 linked Go to Hoffschneider's slaying when he was in prison in the U.S. for an unrelated sexual assault. He was deported to Canada in 2007 after finishing that sentence.

Huntington Beach police moved to extradite Go in the Hoffschneider case. He appealed and it was denied on Thursday.
