COLERAIN TWP (Fox 19)-- Wearing a seatbelt is law, but why do so many people, including teens, not buckle up?
We take that question to the kids.
At Colerain High School, Colerain Twp. officer Keyonia Lumpkins stands in the parking lot to make sure teens have their safety belts on as they leave school.
"It costs nothing to wear your seatbelt, but it can save everything," Lumpkins said.
Sandra Marchan is a junior and Wednesday is her first day driving to school.
She says she always makes sure her passengers are wearing a seatbelt and if she is a passenger, she asks everyone else to buckle up too.
But she says many teens have the impression that wearing a seatbelt isn't cool even though it is the right thing to do.
"They are scared of what their friends would say, they say oh you not cool, like let me not wear my seatbelt," Marchan said.
