Tony Kanaan Overcomes Two Crashes To Qualify For Indy 500

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Tony Kanaan has overcome a second crash to

qualify for this year's Indianapolis 500.

The former IndyCar Series champion made it onto the starting

grid, posting a four-lap average of 224.072 mph with 30 minutes

left in qualifying. That was good enough to bump rookie Sebastian

Saavedra out of the 33-car starting field.

Kanaan, who will start 32nd, wasn't the only big name with a

tense afternoon.

Paul Tracy withdrew his speed from the No. 33 starting spot in

the closing minutes and did not requalify.

Brazil's Bruno Junqueira, the 2002 Indy pole winner, was the

fastest qualifier of the day at 225.662.

Sarah Fisher's four-lap average of 224.434 gave the field a

record fourth woman, and she was the fastest of the four.
