LEBANON, OH (FOX19) - Ryan Widmer's defense team called their star witness Monday morning as his retrial continues.

Widmer is accused of killing his wife, Sarah, in a bathtub in August of 2008. He was convicted, but a judge granted a new trial over juror misconduct.

On Monday, as the trial enters its third week, defense attorneys called Dr. Werner Spitz to the stand. Dr. Spitz has worked in high-profile death cases such as Michael Jackson and JonBenet Ramsey. He says he has performed over 60,000 autopsies in his career.

Spitz performed a second autopsy on Sarah Widmer and determined her cause of death to be drowning, and the manner of her death to be undetermined. The Warren County coroner ruled Sarah's cause of death as drowning, but the manner to be homicide.

Dr. Spitz said bruising on her neck and chest area were from "vigorous" life-saving efforts. He said there was no sign of struggle or beating.

Spitz is expected to be only witness on Monday.

FOX19 will have updates from the courtroom throughout the day right here on FOX19.com.
