CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Three members of the same family have been arrested for a marijuana-growing operation that spanned two counties.

James McKinney Sr., 51, and his son, James McKinney Jr., 34, were arrested Tuesday night after an investigation by Cincinnati Police, the Clermont County Sheriff's Office and the Hamilton County DART squad.

Newtown Police made a traffic stop on McKinney Jr. on Monday and noticed marijuana leaves on his shirt and a large bag in the passenger seat. They obtained a warrant for his home on Parkland Drive and discovered a marijuana growing operation. They later discovered another marijuana growing operation at the home where McKinney Sr. was living, on Britton Avenue in Madisonville.

McKinney Sr. is charged with cultivating marijuana. McKinney Jr. is charged with drug possession, cultivating marijuana and trafficking. In addition, McKinney Jr.'s wife, Abigail, 28, is also facing a count of cultivating marijuana.

The father and son are being held in the Hamilton County Justice Center. Abigail McKinney was taken to the Clermont County Jail.

Clermont County Chief Deputy Rick Combs says police had been investigating the McKinneys for six months. He says the operation was one of the largest in Clermont County within 15 years.

Agents in Clermont County recovered approximately five hundred plants that were in various stages of growth, thousands of dollars worth of very sophisticated equipment used in the operation, $11,000.00 in currency and a handgun.

The children of Abigail Schwartz McKinney, who were in the home at the time of the warrant, were placed with a family member.
