CENTERVILLE— Elder took down defending state champion Moeller in volleyball, winning three games to one. The Panthers collected their second title in three seasons. This was Elder's fourth straight state title appearance.
"We were the early season favorite," said Elder head coach Sean Tierney. "And when we didn't perform to people's expectations, the kids really got down on themselves and to see them fight through that, learn a lot about themselves, learn to trust each other, and have confidence in each other, and just improve their play throughout the season, that's what makes this so satisfying."
The Panthers lost game one 23-25, but won game two 31-29. They took game three 25-20 and the final game of the match 25-19.
Senior John Lucas remembered losing to Moeller in last year's title match, and was determined to not let it happen again. "Last year [Moeller] beat us in the exact same way, they beat us with a block, so I figured we'd come back and beat them the same way," he said.
Moeller, the 2010 GCL-South champs, came up just short in their bid for a third title in four years. The Crusaders beat Elder in 2007 and 2009.
"It was all redemption," Lucas noted. "The team played amazing and I'm so happy we won. It was awesome."
