Tropical storm kills 99 in Central America

GUATEMALA CITY (AP) - More than 100,000 people in Central America are being kept from their homes after evacuations due to a deadly tropical storm that's now taken at least 99 lives.

Landslides and flooding triggered by the year's first tropical storm have killed at least 82 people in Guatemala alone, as authorities struggle to clear roads of debris and reach cut-off communities.

Eight deaths in Honduras were linked to the weather along with nine in El Salvador.

Torrential rains that have pounded an area stretching from southern Mexico nearly to Nicaragua have eased somewhat, but rivers continue to rise, and the chance of flooding along with them.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami warns that remnants of Tropical Storm Agatha are expected to deliver 10 to 20 inches of rain over southeastern Mexico, Guatemala and parts of El Salvador.
