Jennifer Smith's daughter Tyler didn't get her high school diploma because she didn't pass the Ohio graduation test...today we asked her. " How is she doing? She's doing great. Tyler is getting tutoring done three days a week through CYC."
Jennifer is confident that wiill help Tyler pass the make up test on June 15th. She stillw ants the Ohio Department of Education to re-evaulate how the assess student's eligibility for graduation.
"And I was also told by the state they are trying to look at that."
The state is exploring what a new exam that would replace the OGT would look like. Scott Blake the Dept.of Education spokesman says but it's not because standardized tests are bad, it's just that times are changing.
"But certainly has been an evolution of thinking how we asses students in Ohio and nationwide."
Blake adds that research shows students who have trouble with standardized tests, " "Maybe better able to express what they learn through a dissertation on that."
The process to actually change the Ohio Graduation test is so complex there is no deadline to get it done. But work has started, a little too much too late for Jennifer and her daughter, but she says it's a step in the right direction.
