WASHINGTON, D.C. (FOX19) - Senator Sherrod Brown announced Wednesday that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded $8.5 million in funding for a riverfront park in downtown Cincinnati.
The 45-acre site is between Paul Brown Stadium and Great American Ball Park. Construction on the park is expected to begin within weeks.
"This funding will play a critical role in the ongoing revitalization of downtown Cincinnati while bringing jobs to the area," Brown said. "The Ohio River has played an important role in Cincinnati's development and this new riverfront park shows how the river will continue to play an important part in the city's future."
Design and construction of the site is being led by the Cincinnati Park Board. Monarch Construction has been awarded the contract for Phase I of the project, including the Walnut Street grand stairs and the Walnut Street Fountain.
