26 killed, 450 hurt in new wave of Kyrgyz unrest

Kyrgyzstan (AP) - Health officials say the death toll in ethnic clashes in southern Kyrgyzstan has reached 26, with at least 450 injured.

Several buildings across the city of Osh were ablaze Friday after gunfire that witnesses said begin Thursday night.

Health Ministry spokeswoman Yelena Bailinova said many of the injured were being treated for stab and gunshot wounds.

The violence is the worst in Kyrgyzstan, which hosts both U.S. and Russian military bases, since a bloody uprising toppled the president in April.
