Brighton center sees new need

NEWPORT, KY (FOX19)--Bear Clifton can easily see the need when he walks into the hygiene products room at Brighton Center. It's almost empty.

"What's unfortunate is that food stamp programs normally don't cover items like this, so families are left to kind of fend for themselves," says Bear.

The donation center expected demand to rise this summer, but not for health and beauty items, he says.

"It seems like every person coming through the door has a demand," says Bear.

Toothbrushes and toothpaste top Bear's list. He says, if you can find it in your kitchen or bathroom, they probably need it at Brighton Center. The Newport donation center has already served 1000 families this month.

"67 percent of those families have never had to ask for services before in their life," says Bear.

It's also a number that is up from 750 families served in June 2009.
