COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) - Fire officials are investigating an early morning fire that damaged the bell tower at St. Benedict's Church in Covington.
Crews had to drag hoses up nearly five stories or 100 feet to reach the fire which broke out around 1:30 a.m. Monday morning.
Tom Brinkman, a retired firefighter who's been a member of St. Benedict's Church for 30 years, showed us some of the damage.
The parish, which has about 200 families, will celebrate its 125th anniversary later this summer.
The church itself is 103 years old.
Brinkman says fire crews were able to limit water damage that was cascading from the bell tower by setting up tarps all over the church and route water to open drains in a first floor restroom.
Water damage is estimated to be between 50 and 75 thousand dollars.
