BATAVIA, OH (FOX19)  - A local community celebrates a fallen hero's birthday-- without him.

It's been two years since U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Matt Maupin's remains were found. Staff Sgt. Maupin would be 27 years old today.

He disappeared seven years ago, and every year on July 13th, the community comes together to celebrate the day Ssgt. Maupin was born.

Tuesday evening, dozens of people gathered outside the Yellow Ribbon Center in Batavia to honor the sacrifice he made for locals' freedom. His father Keith attended the event. Keith Maupin held back tears as family and friends came together to honor his son's memory.

Ssgt. Maupin went missing in 2004 in Iraq. His remains weren't found until four years later, but Keith said Tuesday's event was not just about the sacrifice his son made, but the sacrifice all servicemen and women make every day. Several volunteers read the names of local fallen heroes.

Tuesday's event was truly about leaning on each other for support. Specialist Jacob Dohrenwend's family was there as well. Dohrenwend, 20, died last month in Iraq after suffering non-combat related injuries while on a private security detail for the commander of his battalion.
