OWENSVILLE, OH (FOX19) - A local soldier who died in Afghanistan has returned to the U.S.

The remains of Joseph Bauer, 27, arrived Monday at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.

Bauer was in the U. S. Army and had just re-enlisted to become a career soldier.

Family members say Defense Department officials informed them that Bauer died Saturday when an explosive hit his vehicle while he was working duty as a mine sweeper.

Rev. Jerry Hiland announced Bauer's death Saturday to the congregation at St. Louis Church. Bauer is the second member of St. Louis to die while serving overseas. Marine Nick Erdy was killed in Iraq in 2005.
