Cold Spring unites to change traffic pattern on AA highway

COLD SPRING (FOX 19) - The Cold Spring city council hosted a meeting Monday night  to discuss a traffic study and potential traffic light at a KY 9 or AA Highway intersection.

Residents in the Glenridge subdivision and surrounding streets want a traffic light installed in the place of flashing lights where Glenridge Drive intersects the AA Highway.

Resident Glen Elsner said nearly 1,000 vehicles come in and out of Glen Ridge Drive daily from the AA highway. That is more traffic flow than in 2004 and 2007 when earlier state studies were done.

Elsner added there are more than 400 homes in the Glen Ridge and Ivy Ridge subdivisions now.

In 2007 The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet or KTC did a study that shows more than 22,000 cars drive through the area in a 12-hour period. That was after a flashing light was installed in 2006. The KTC concluded the State didn't see a need for a full fledged traffic light at that time.

Residents in the area want another study to be performed and a traffic stop light installed. Cold Spring city manager, Michael Vank, agrees.

"I personally think it would be a good idea. There are a number of people that have to exit and enter these two developments. And there is a lot of traffic, and a lot of speed," Vank said.

State officials said at the meeting that a traffic count will be performed by engineers from District 6 once school starts. That count will better reflect the amount of traffic at the intersection year-round.
