New parish celebrates first mass

BOND HILL (FOX19) - Four Archdiocese of Cincinnati parishes merged for their first Mass Sunday morning as the Church of the Resurrection.

The new parish combines four predominantly African American churches: St. Agnes in Bond Hill, St. Andrew in Avondale, St. Mark in Evanston and St. Martin de Porres in Lincoln Heights.  The building of St. Agnes Church will be their new home, as the Church of the Resurrection.

"There is so much more we can do to proclaim the Good News as one faith community than we could ever do as four separate parishes, " says the Rev. Dennis Chriszt, pastor-designate.  "God has a dream for us, and we are together trying to discover that vision for the Church of the Resurrection."

Merger talks started in 2005, to find a way to cut costs and serve the community best.

"It was a long time coming and it was hard, because nobody wanted to leave their church," says parishioner Herschel Chalk. "But now that we're here together, we're going to celebrate and we're going to rejoice."

The opening of the new church included the important symbols from all four of the communities coming together, like the processional crosses and Easter candles.  Priests also combined water from the four churches' baptismal fonts into one.
