85-year-old woman robbed in Newport home

NEWPORT, KY (FOX 19) – UPDATE -Police continue to an invest the burglary of an 85 year old woman this afternoon.  In a press release, Newport police say the suspect forced his way into the woman's home, and told her he need money for drugs.

Then the report states, he bound her hands, assaulted her and took her wallet and cash.  The victim is still in the hospital this afternoon.

The home is sectioned off into apartments, some of which are for rent. Neighbors say that's what got the suspect into the woman's home.

 Barbara Barnes  lives across the street from the victim and says she was the sweetest old lady and a great neighbor.

"she is very quiet, keeps to herself, and a church going woman," said Barnes     "she is lovely to talk to, nice and sweet."

Those who live and work in the area say they are now talking some extra precautions. Shayna shields works nearby and says she' is noticing more crime in the area.

 "I don't think this is a onetime thing," said Shields. "Several times a week something happens around here."

Others living around the intersection of Washington Ave and 7th street, believe it's time for better security measures.

"I've locked my windows and my doors now," said Barnes

The subject is described as a black male, 6'3", medium build, wearing a black shirt, and white pants with black stripes.

NEWPORT, KY (FOX19) - UPDATE - An 85-year-old woman is recovering in the hospital after a man robbed her in her Newport home.

Police said it happened around 4 p.m. ,Monday. Officers said the victim's daughter had just dropped her off at her home at the corner of E. 7th St. and Washington Avenue. Moments later, police said the suspect knocked on her door.

Her daughter tells FOX19 that a man came to the door wanting to see an apartment for rent.  He then strong-armed the woman. She was found a couple of hours later when a daughter came by later that evening around 7 p.m.

Police said the suspect is a black male, about 6-feet tall, between 25-34 years old, and wearing black pants with white piping.

The victim told her family the man seemed to be looking for drugs or drug money.

Police said they are reviewing surveillance video from cameras throughout the neighborhood and nearby stores.
