Coroner releases cause of death for woman run over by police cruiser

OVER THE RHINE, OH (FOX19) - The Hamilton County coroner says a woman who was run over by a police officer died of blunt force injuries as a result of being run over by a motor vehicle.

Joann Burton was laying under some blankets in Washington Park on July 27 when she was run over by a police cruiser driven by veteran officer Marty Polk.

Hamilton County Coroner Dr. O'dell Owens says Burton suffered a lacerated liver and pelvic and rib fractures. Her toxicology test was negative for alcohol and positive for cocaine metabolites.

The coroner ruled her death an accident.

Ohio State Highway Patrol officers are investigating the accident and are expected to turn over their findings to the Hamilton County Prosecutor's Office.
