5 firefighters injured battling Union Township blaze

UNION TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) - Crews from multiple fire companies responded to a large apartment fire in Union Township Friday morning.

Flames broke out just after around 10:15 a.m. at an apartment complex in the 3900 block of Brandychase Way, off of S.R. 125.

A caller from the bottom floor of the three-story building told 911 dispatchers that his porch was on fire. Firefighters responded immediately.

Five firefighters - four with Union Township and one with Anderson Township - were taken to the hospital for heat-related injuries. They were all released from the hospital later Friday.

At least three units suffered major damage. The rest of the 12 units in the building also suffered damage. The Red Cross is assisting those who are being displaced.

Investigators say while they were fighting this fire, another fire broke out in a kitchen at the same building. Crews were able to get it under control quickly.

No cause has yet been determined for the fire. The caller claimed that a tiki torch was responsible, but that has not been confirmed by the fire department.
