UNION TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) - Union Township fire investigators say Tiki torches are the cause of a large fire that damaged an apartment building.
The fire broke out August 13 at the Brandychase Apartments and injured five firefighters.
Investigators say the tenants on the first floor of the three-story building were using the torches to fend off bugs. Flames from the torches lit some combustible material on the deck, and caused the wooden deck and vinyl siding to catch fire. The fire then spread all the way to the top of the building.
Investigators say the fire caused $90,000 in structural damage, but only the third floor apartment is considered a total loss because the roof caved in.
Fire investigators say open flames are not permitted within 10 feet of a multi-family dwelling. Any further action regarding the fire will be handled between the tenants and the owners of the apartment complex.
