UNION, KY (FOX19) - A Covington man is behind bars after a string of burglaries in the Union area.
A resident in the 9900 block of Calava Court was awakened around 3 a.m. to the sound of her dog barking and her garage door opened. She found a man entering her neighbor's garage when she woke up. She provided dispatchers with a description of the man and his car.
Deputies stopped David Smith, 23, of Covington, in the neighborhood and located 12 purses in his car.
Police say Smith's method of operation was to remove garage door openers from cars parked outside and use them to gain entry into attached garages. He would then enter the house from the garage and take purses that were usually nearby.
Smith is charged with Burglary 2nd degree, Theft by unlawful taking, and Persistent felony offender 2nd degree. Additional charges are anticipated. Police say Smith has a lengthy criminal history for burglary and theft.
Detectives are investigating similar burglaries in the Hebron, Kentucky area that occurred last week and are asking anyone who might have experienced a similar burglary to notify the Boone County Sheriff's Department at (859) 334-2175.
