Surgeons performing bilateral hand transplant with Live Twitter updates
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - A team of Kentucky doctors performing a rare double hand transplant has been posting the progress of the surgery on Twitter.
The Louisville Courier-Journal reported that the doctors started the operation at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Jewish Hospital Hand Care Center. A hospital spokeswoman told the paper the surgery was going well.
The newspaper reports the bilateral transplant marks the third done in the country and the first done in the region. Two other double hand transplants were done at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, the first in May 2009 and the second in February of this year. Louisville doctors performed the nation's first five single hand transplants.
