Underground explosion evacuates school, cancels classes

EVANSTON, OH (FOX19) - An underground explosion evacuated a school in Evanston on Thursday morning.

Police say a possible electrical fire occurred around 8:30 a.m. in a manhole in the 1700 block of Duck Creek Road, near the Alliance Charter Academy. Students heard a loud boom.

"We didn't know what was going on and thought it was a drill," said Tiera Newman, an 8th grader at Alliance Charter Academy. "We went to parking lot...then the teachers said they don't know what was going on. So we started getting scared. We didn't know what was happening."

Police say no one was injured. The school was evacuated and classes were cancelled for the day. Parents were notified that the students were being bused to the Evanston Recreation Center.

"I think they did a good job getting things out and alerting people but there was chaos with kids not knowing what's going on," said parent Eugena Thompson.
