CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19)  - Two pilots of a UPS cargo plane died in a crash after the aircraft went down Friday just after takeoff.

One of the pilots, 48-year-old Captain Doug Lampe, graduated from Western Hills High School in 1980. He moved to Louisville years ago with his family. He was with UPS since 1995.

FOX19 spoke with Ed, one of Lampe's childhood friends, over the phone on Saturday night. Ed said he knew Lampe in high school, and attended his first wedding. Ed said Lampe always wanted to be a pilot and talked about that dream in high school.

38-year-old First Officer Matthew Bell worked with UPS since 2006 and is from Sanford, Florida.

"This is a terrible tragedy, and all of us at UPS extend our deepest sympathies to the families and friends of both of these crew members," said UPS CEO Scott Davis. "Our thoughts and prayers will continue to be with them during this difficult time."

The 3-year-old 747 was en route to Cologne, Germany.

"We established an internal command center within minutes of learning of this tragedy. It will be staffed around the clock with experts from every part of our operation," said UPS Airlines President Bob Lekites. "Safe, secure operations are our top priorities for our employees, our customers, and our public stakeholders."
